Create your own Homemade Granola Recipe!

homemade granola recipe

We love granola in our house! In fact, we’re hooked on this Homemade Granola Recipe. The kids chose several of the ingredients, and I added the extra hemp seeds for protein. This is so easy to make, and you can customize it with such a wide variety of ingredient choices. We only used honey in this recipe, but you can add a couple tablespoons of brown sugar to sweeten it up.

As a mom, I try to control the sugar my boys get because there’s sugar in everything. When I buy granola, I always looked at sugar grams first. I like to buy in bulk, and not the pre-packaged bags. There’s a rage from 6 grams up to 17 grams per serving, which is a lot. I began to feel frustrated with the lack of choices, ingredients, and the amount of sugar. This is when I decided to make my own granola, and the kids were excited that they got to choose what they like. I also added more seeds and nuts for protein.

Answers to commonly asked questions!

Can granola be healthy?

Granola can be made with a wide variety of healthy ingredients. The oats in itself deliver fiber, iron, and the nuts and seeds contain heart-healthy unsaturated fats. On the other hand, it can be loaded with unwanted ingredients, and high in calories and sugar.

To keep the calories down eat smaller portions. Also, granola tastes great sprinkled over yogurt, or topped onto a delicious smoothie bowl.

Here’s a few things to keep in mind when looking at labels:

  • Sugar – aim to keep this around 8 grams per serving
  • Fat – aim for 2 and 3 grams of fat per 1/4-cup serving, and look for healthier oils such as coconut or extra virgin olive oil
  • Calories – calories should be around 200 per ¼-cup serving, 270 calories per ⅓-cup serving, or 400 calories per ½-cup serving.

Can you store homemade granola in the refrigerator?

Granola can be stored in a cool dry place, in an airtight container up to 6 months, and maybe longer. It’s best to check the granola for freshness. Sometimes the oils may go rancid if stored too long.

Can you freeze homemade granola?

You can also freeze granola up to 3 months in and airtight container, or freezable air tight bag. After doing a little research for some facts on this question, Emma Christensen from the Kitchn suggests freezing if you want to make extra. She also mentioned to leave out the dried fruit, and add to the granola when you’re ready to eat it. The fruit can get hard in the freezer.

Can granola go bad?

Yes, granola can go bad if stored too long. The fats in the oils used, and the nuts which contains oils can go rancid. Make sure to use fresh nut when preparing your granola.

  • honey
  • freeze dried blueberries

Homemade Granola Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 300ºF, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a medium mixing bowl add the dry ingredients, whole rolled oats, almond slices, coconut chips, hemp seeds, and a dash salt. Set aside while preparing the wet ingredients.
  • Add the coconut oil and honey to a microwave safe cup or bowl. Microwave using the melt option for about 60 seconds until the coconut oil is melted. Then add the vanilla.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture.  Stir, and fold until coated and well mixed.
  • Now pour the mixture onto the baking sheet with parchment paper, and with a spatula spread out evenly.
  • Place in the oven and bake for 8 minutes. After the 8 minutes, turn the baking sheet so the front edge is now in the back, and mix the granola. Doing this will ensure even toasting, for a nice golden hue.
  • Bake an additional 8 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool and add the freeze dried blueberries.  It’s now ready to eat.

Notes

This recipe only calls for honey to sweeten, but add 2-3 tablespoons of brown sugar to the dry ingredients if you would like to sweeten it up.

This recipe is for loose granola, but if you would like it clumpy then add one whisked egg white after the wet and dry ingredients are well mixed. Spread onto the baking sheet, and DO NOT STIR while baking. Once it’s baked and cooled, break into clusters and add the freeze dried blueberries.
