Why You’ll Love This Apple Pie Cinnamon Roll Recipe
Irresistible textures in one treat – the buttery and pillow-y dough is loaded with softened pieces of apple and gooey cinnamon sugar syrup. And if that wasn’t enough, these cinnamon rolls get an extra dose of sweetness from the velvet-like cream cheese icing spread over the tops of the rolls!
A perfect treat for fall – apple pie and cinnamon rolls are two very popular treats enjoyed during fall and the colder months of the year. Combining elements of apple pie with fluffy cinnamon rolls is a match made in heaven!
Easy to adapt – while I love these apple pie cinnamon rolls just as they are, you could easily adapt them to suit your personal preferences. Add an apple crumble topping over the cream cheese frosting or use refrigerated cinnamon roll dough for convenience, as just two examples.
Make ahead – The cinnamon rolls can be made a day in advance, allowing you to simply top them with freshly made cream cheese frosting to serve in minutes!

How To Make Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls
Instructions below are to make the dough in a stand mixer, but you can also make it by hand.
Make the cinnamon roll dough
Heat the milk in the microwave or on the hob until warm to touch (30-60 seconds in the microwave on high should be enough).

In the mixing bowl of your stand mixer, combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Wait until it starts to bubble, around 8-10 minutes.

Whisk the eggs in a small bowl. Add the whisked eggs to the milk and yeast mixture and whisk to combine.

Now add the flour and, using the dough hook, mix for 2 -3 minutes until a shaggy/ rough dough forms.

Now add the butter and beat for a further 8-10 minutes or until a smooth dough ball has formed.

Cover the dough in cling wrap or with a damp tea towel to rise until it’s doubled in size. This should take around 2 hours at room temperature.
Make the apple pie mixture

Now it’s time to make the apple pie mixture. Combine the chopped apple, white sugar and cinnamon in a large fry pan.

Cook on a medium hit for 5-8 minutes until the apples are cooked through.

Add in brown sugar, mix until well incorporated, and then take the pan off the heat to cool.

Once the dough has doubled in size, remove it from the bowl and roll it into a large rectangular shape. Make sure to flour the surface well or use a silicone mat (my preferred option).
Make the rolls and bake

Pour the cooled cinnamon apple mixture onto the dough and spread it out evenly, leaving space around the sides as above.

Now roll the dough up tightly form the short side and slice it every 2 inches or so, making 6-8 large cinnamon rolls.

Place the individual rolls into a greased baking pan with the cut side up. Spread any of the spilt apple pie filling over the top of the rolls.

Bake the rolls in an oven preheated to 350 degrees F for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.
Make the icing

While they’re baking, make the icing: combine the powdered sugar, butter, and cream cheese in a bowl and whisk until smooth.

Allow the cinnamon rolls to cool a little before spreading a thick layer of icing over the top. (If they’re too hot, the icing will melt.)

Serve your apple pie cinnamon rolls straight from the baking pan and enjoy!

Storage Instructions For Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls
Keep these apple pie cinnamon rolls fresh and tasty with these simple storage tips:
Room Temperature
I don’t recommend storing these apple pie cinnamon rolls at room temperature with the icing as the cream cheese is an ingredient that needs to be refrigerated.
You can store the cinnamon rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days without the icing and simply add the icing to the rolls just before serving, if you like.
In The Fridge
These apple pie cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Freezing
Store these apple pie cinnamon rolls (frosted or unfrosted) in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2-3 months. Thaw the frozen cinnamon rolls in the fridge or on the countertop before serving.
